How We Check

If an answer looks wrong.

You probably came here because a game marked you wrong and you don't think you were, or a number looked off. Fair. Here is the standard we actually hold, plainly, including the parts we can't promise.

Where the numbers come from

Every score, stat, and record in a Stumped game comes from real data, not from memory and not from a guess. We build each game from official league data and established public sports databases, the same feeds these numbers live in everywhere else. If we can't reach the data for a given day, we show nothing rather than put up a figure we can't stand behind. So a final score or a stat line in a game isn't our recollection of it. It's pulled from the record.

What we don't verify

Two honest limits, so you know where the line is.

The writing around the numbers is not held to the same bar as the numbers. A stat line or a score is checked against the source. The sentence of context beside it is drawn from reputable reporting, but it is editorial, and it can be looser than the figure it sits next to.

And we do not own the data upstream of us. If an official feed or a public database records something incorrectly, a game can carry that error before we catch it. We re-check records and superlatives over time, because a "most ever" gets passed and a leader changes, but we read the same sources everyone else does, and they are not perfect either.

When you're sure, and it still says wrong

Some disagreements are not mistakes. Worth ruling these out first:

• Different sources count the same thing differently: which games are included, how a stat is credited, whether the postseason counts. Two true numbers can disagree because they are measuring slightly different things.
• A name game can have more than one right answer. We try to accept reasonable alternates, a nickname, a former team name, a second player who also fits, but we will not have caught every one.
• An in-season number reflects the games played so far. What was true yesterday can be a game behind today.

If you have ruled those out and it still looks wrong, it may well be ours.
