How to play

Decipher

Decipher is the daily WNBA game on Stumped. Each day you get one real player's season averages and a blacked-out silhouette, and your job is to work out who she is. It rewards knowing the whole league, not just the stars, and a fresh subject drops every morning.

What you start with

You see the player's current-season averages, the numbers that describe a WNBA player at a glance: points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and threes made per game. The identity is redacted and the silhouette is hidden. The stats update nightly from the season's box scores, so they are always current.

Making guesses

You have six guesses, and each one has to be a player from the pool. A guess is not just right or wrong: every guess reports how the player you named lines up against the hidden answer across six traits, her conference, position, height, jersey number, draft slot and college.

• Green means an exact match on that trait.
• Amber means close: a height or draft position within two, or a shared position.
• An up or down arrow points you toward the answer, for example telling you the real player is taller, or was drafted earlier.

The silhouette also de-redacts a little with every miss, so even a wrong guess brings the picture into focus. Name her before your six guesses run out, or you are Stumped for the day.

An example

Suppose the averages point to a low-minutes guard. You guess a veteran point guard. The board might come back with a green on conference, an amber on position, and a down arrow on height, telling you the hidden player is shorter. That rules a lot of people out. Your next guess uses those hints to close in, and the silhouette is a touch clearer than it was.
